Ulysse Nardin, the company, was founded in 1846 and remained under Ulysse's control until his passing in 1876, when his 21-year old son, Paul-David Nardin took over.
Since the founding of the company, Ulysse Nardin was known for their high-quality and high-accuracy craftsmanship, so much so that they became known worldwide for their Marine Chronometers, the most accurate mechanical clocks ever made, achieving a precision of around a tenth of a second per day.
In exhibitions held at various locations, such as Paris, London, Tokio or Buenos Aires, Ulysse Nardin received a total of:
14 Grands Prix (First Prizes)
the "Prize Medal" (1862 - London International Exhibition)
the "Progress Medal"
10 Gold Medals
2 Prix d'Honneur
2 Silver Medals
Until 1967, one second was defined by the rotation of the earth, and because of this, competitive chronometer watches were calibrated and certified in an astronomical observatory. The Observatoire Cantonal de Neuchâtel was the main Swiss observatory where such certifications were done, and in 1975, when the accuracy of mechanical timepieces became irrelevant with the advent of quartz watches, it released a publication regarding the performance of chronometers from 1846 to 1975: of the 4504 certificates awarded in this period, 4324 went to Ulysse Nardin.
In 1983 Ulysse Nardin was purchased by a group headed by Rolf W. Schnyder, its current president. Mr. Schnyder brought in Dr. Ludwig Oechslin, a scientist, inventor, historian and watch-maker extraordinaire with whom they set out to design and develop complicated timepieces that had never before existed. The first example of this was the Astrolabium, introduced in 1985, part of the Trilogy of Time along with the Planetarium Copernicus (1988) and the Tellurium Johannes Kepler (1992).
The Ulysse Nardin Astrolabium, entered into the Guinness Book of Records in 1989 as the most complicated wristwatch ever made with 21 complications, indicates the position of the sun, the moon and the stars in the sky at any given hour as seen from Earth, as well as sunrise and sunset, dawn and dusk, moonphases, moonrise and moonset, eclipses of sun and moon, the month and the day of the week.
Ever since it's birth, Ulysse Nardin has been at the forefront of outstanding developments in horological technique and from the hand of Ludwig Oechslin, Ulysse Nardin has created the most complicated watch in history, the Astrolabium, as well as a whole array of models which cover the extent of horological experience, such as minute repeaters with automatons, tourbillons, as well as the first perpetual calendar in history with bi-directional adjustment of all calendar displays. This collection also features the Freak, a dual escapement beauty with no hands.

BRIEF HISTORY OF SILVANA WATCHES
The Silvana watch brand name can be traced back to the 19th Century, founded in 1868. The "Association Cantonale Bernoise de Fabricants d'Horlogerie" stated that Silvana envolved from the split of the A. Reymond S.A., Tramelan. The Manufacture d'Horlogerie A. Reymond S.A. was founded in 1898. Therefore the first Silvana watches were made already in the 19th Century. A remarkable fact which places Silvana among the oldest Swiss watch brands.
The registration of the watch factory Silvana S.A. took place on 24 May 1923 in the Commercial Registry of Courtelary, domiciled in Tramelan. At that time the company employed approximately 70 people. In the same year the Silvana factory was admitted to the "Association Cantonale Bernoise des Fabricants d'Horlogerie" as an independent member.
In 1929 Silvana merged with the traditional and then famous watch factory H. Gasser & Co. from Bienne and on 17 February 1931, Silvana S.A. moved their offices and production to Bienne. Until 1935, Silvana watches were produced at H. Gasser & Co.
On 27 December 1935, Silvana transferred their activities back to their origins to the charming village of Tramelan in the Swiss Jura. Between 1936 and 1969, the watch factory Silvana S.A. developed continously and in the 1960's business expanded gradually and turnover increased year over year.
Silvana's markets were not only restricted to Europe, Silvana products were very popular also in South America, in the Middle East and the Caribbean. Both the distribution and sales were organized out of the company's own offices in Bienne.
Silvana was very successful with their lines of pocket watches during 1940 - 1970, with motifs such as "La Montre Paysan", "La Montre Chasseur" or the special edition "Chemin de Fer Turc" graved on the back of the watch. A special diving watch was very well sold in South America and the Caribbean during the 1960's.
In 1969 the owner of the watch factory Silvana S.A. joined with an industrialist from Neuchâtel, who aready possessed the brands "Avia", "Helvetia" and "Fleurier Watch". This cooperation resulted in the firm Avia & Silvana S.A., which soon thereafter was integrated into the holding company of the Societe des Garde-Temps S.A. SGT, a conglomerate, which, besides owning various prestigious watch brands, ran subsidiaries in Switzerland and abroad and wrote turnovers of over 100 million Swiss Francs per year.
In July of 1982, SGT sold the brand Silvana to a commercial firm in Bienne and on 27 February 1992, Silvana AG was founded and registered in the Commercial Registry of Zurich. It is through the guidance of this company, that the spirit of a century old craftsmanship, honouring the high quality standards of famous Swiss watchmaking will lead the Silvana brand to new heights.

Abraham-Louis Juillard opened his small watchmaking store inCortébert village in Switzerland in 1790. This date is commonly used as the date of founding although the Cortébert brand name was only registered in 1855 using the bottony cross as a logo.
Cortébert Turkish Railroad watch
Cortébert went on to being one of the most desirable premium watchmakers, appreciated for their extensive range of own movements.
In the 1930s the company started distributing their Italian railroad watches through the Perseo brand, as the facist Italy was rejective of foreign brand names.
By 1944 Cortébert had a lineup consisting of 20 different calibers and a range of special railway watches that became synonymous with the marque.
In the early 1970s Cortébert mysteriously blended into the Perseo brand name, not producing Cortébert watches anymore.

History of Sicura and Breitling Watches
History in the commercial register of the Breitling, formerly Sicura AG
Entry in the Commercial Register:
02/05/1955
Legal Head Office:
Grenchen (SO)
Former name * Sicura Montres SA
Purpose of the company
Manufacture, sale and development of all products and components for watches, jewelry and jewelry industry for the manufacture of instruments and accessories of aviation for the textile and leather industry, optical instruments and other various accessories. Breitling AG Grenchen, Old names:
- Montres Sicura SA Grenchen
- Watches Sicura AG Grenchen
- Sicura Grenchen Watch Company Ltd.
The current Sicura/Breitling SA is the continue of Sicura/Breitling history and its founded in 1955. The history of Breitling on the brand name, than is the name Breitling-Laederich the first Breitling brand in the year 1840, not G. Leon Breitling and not Leon G. Breitling SA in 1884.
Leon Breitling and his son Gaston never used the brand name Breitling on their watchs, only after the death of Gaston Breitling in 1927 the Leon G. Breitling SA started with the brand name Breitling on the dial.
Breitling 1884 was only a marketing joke of E. Schneider, when he invented his first new Chronomat in 1984. Of the current Breitling company. The current company prefers to celebrate the Anniversary of Leon, Gaston, and Willy Breitling's company. Note that the current company only switched from Sicura AG to Breitling AG in 1993. The very early 1980s watches sometimes had cases marked for Sicura. I think Breitling The Book has some very interesting pages on the transition.
Breitling Laederich is an older company, but there is no known connection to the company founded in 1884 by Leon Breitling. It is misleading to confuse the two companies.
There is no known advertising or catalog copy that shows "Breitling" on the dial of a watch before the mid-/late- 1930s. Many sellers will offer pieces arguing otherwise. However, that all watches made by the company founded by Leon Breitling in 1884 will show a mark of the company on the movement, sometimes under the dial. Most horlogeries don't accept an older Breitling as real until they see a mark known to be used by the company on the movement. The exception is the 1940s, when only the marks on the cases identify a real Breitling
In May 1955, sole proprietorship named "Joh. Gobber, Horlogerie", Grenchen bought stock company's foundation, it has been run by Ernest Schneider. Mr. Schneider acquired property rights of "Montres Breitling" in Geneva in 1979, a trademark which had been held by the Breitling family since 1884. The Geneva based production was transferred to "Montres Sicura AG" in Grenchen, which adopted the name of Breitling AG in 1993.' 'Former name: Montres Sicura SA; as of 29.11.1993: Breitling AG'

The Corum adventure started in 1955, in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. When the co-founders of the company, Simone Ries and Ren Bannwart, joined Gaston Ries' watchmaking workshops, they knew that their new firm would benefit from this solid experience. Their alliance quickly established creativity and traditional craftsmanship as the order of the day.
Shortly thereafter, the company carved out a significant niche for itself, one that remains theirs alone to this day, with a classic model that quickly became an international best-seller: the $20 Liberty Eagle watch, which is made from a genuine U.S. $20 gold piece. In the Corum workshops, genuine mint-state Liberty eagle ($10) and double eagle ($20) coins are carefully cut in half, and in between the obverse and reverse of the coin, a high-quality movement is carefully inserted. Although other companies had made this style of watch since the 1920's, it was always as dress pocket watches. Corum's breakthrough was making it as a wristwatch.
It would be a bit misleading, however, to say that such a procedure can be accomplished like clockwork, for in reality, completing a Corum gold coin watch requires numerous steps and many painstaking hours of meticulous hand-finishing. In fact, machining the inside of the case, so that a movement can be fitted, can in and of itself take several hours of patient work.
Today, Corum can be justly proud of the fact that it has one of the richest collections in its field. Corum watches are immediately recognizable as such, and although a few of the movements are based on ebauches, these ebauches are often reworked by Corum's in-house watchmakers. A vast range of original designs, which with their infinite variety, define the Corum style - always in the forefront of time. From the "Golden Bridge" to the "Limelight", "Coin Watch", "Romulus" and "Admiral's Cup", Corum's products reveal a progressive attitude that is quite rare in today's watchmaking world. Rather than merely resting on its laurels, hoping to maintain the value of its tradition, at the cost of new ideas, Corum continually debuts new designs. Their attitude might best be summed up as follows: "To create is to construct, and to construct is to live".
This motto has become the keynote of Corum's policy. True creation cannot be compared to merely re-inventing old models that have proved reliable in the past. Time moves on, each second thrusts us onwards into the future, and it is a mistake to claim to have mastered time without having the courage to move forward constantly...to offer the wearer a watch that reflects his or her own vitality.
To mark its 40th anniversary Corum commissioned a new design center which is interesting for a number of reasons: it is tangible evidence of the company's policy of continuous innovation and it is the product of an architectural competition. The idea of this competition is once again a reflection of the pioneering spirit that was important to the company's founders in the early days.
Guided by its own enthusiasm, this young company has made great efforts to establish a reputation to match it ambition. The results speak for themselves: a very effective publicity campaign and successful sponsorship program demonstrate Corum's desire to be at the helm and not in the wake.
Since December of 1998, Corum has been jointly owned by the Bannwart family and the Al Fardan Group in Doha, Qatar. Following several months of negotiations, American businessman Severin Wunderman, a well-known figure in the watch industry, has personally acquired a majority interest in the company rather than through his company, Severin Montres, Ltd., "Because I want to be personally involved with the firm. I intend to maintain the current personnel in their positions, from management to production, and to capitalize on the rich traditions that have made the reputation of Corum throughout the world", he stated.
In the meantime, the master watchmakers at La-Chaux-de-Fonds continue to produce the magnificent timepieces - including such masterpieces as the Minute Repeater and Minute Repeater/Tourbillon - for which they are rightly famous. And they do so in an environment which rewards creativity and treasures craftsmanship - a perfect marriage of tradition and progressive thinking.
