BRIEF HISTORY OF ORIS WATCHES

Oris was founded in 1904 by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian at Hölstein, Switzerland. Oris produced no-nonsense time pieces which were both high quality and affordable. With the advent of quartz, as with many other Swiss watch manufacturers, Oris struggled to find its place in the watch market.

However, Oris continued to focus on the manufacturing of mechanical watches. Oris has been able to hold its own creating watches with unique mechanical features that distinguish from those with electronics and quartz. Since the mid-eighties, Oris has progressively launched more mechanical watches with features such as analogue date pointers, automatic movement, mechanical chronographs, and analogue world time display. Interestingly, despite the turbulent changes the watch industry experienced, Oris has found itself doing what it always has, producing great value quality mechanical watches.

In 2004, Oris celebrated 100 years of existence and is going stronger than ever. Oris boasts many names wearing an Oris such as Sean Penn, Harrison Ford, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicolas Cage, and Meg Ryan. Oris is also a key sponsor of the BMW Williams Formula 1 team, helping them to grow their brand awareness, and expand internationally.

The 2008 Oris range includes the TT3, Divers, Artelier, BC3, BC4, Big Crown, Miles, Chronoris, Classic and Flight Timer collections.

BRIEF HISTORY OF WEST END WRISTWATCHES

West End was a good quality manufacturer that specialized in marketing to the Middle East and South Asia. There are earlier West End watches marked C.S. (I) for Civil Service in India

The West End Watch Company was created in 1886. The West End, a district of the centre of London, inspired its name to Mr. Arnold Charpié who was the Bombay representative of the Alcide Droz & Sons firm, a watch company established at Saint-Imier (Canton of Berne) in Switzerland.

In 1886, MM. Amstutz and Droz, the owner of Alcide Droz & Sons firm, began the exploitation of the trademark West End Watch Company in the Indian Market and developed the first waterproof pocket watch ever produced : "L'Impermeable" (nowadays exposed at the International Watchmaking Museum of La Chaux-de-Fonds).

During the First World War, a large task of British and Indian soldiers was sent from Bombay to the Persian Gulf to reach the Mesopotamia (the current Iraq). They received some West End Watches.

In 1917, West End Watch Company changed its name to Société des Montres West End SA and is registered in Geneva. At the same time the sub-brand Sowar was also registered.

In 1934, the Société des Montres West End SA was the first brand to introduce the Incabloc anti-shock system invented by Mr. Braunschweig.

In 1973, after several years of development, the company was finally sold, for lack of heirs, to his main supplier : "Aubry Brothers Ltd", established in Noirmont ( Jura) to keep open the Bombay West End Watch's office.

Since 2000 the workshops and the head centre of the company have been moved to Leytron , in Wallis. At the same time, the company was taken over by new shareholders and the management changed.

In 2005 West End Watch Company celebrated its 120th anniversary of uninterrupted presence in Asia with the introduction of its "Silk Road concept". This concept came from the fact the Silk Road crossed most of the regions where the brand possessed, and still possesses, counters.

Nowadays, West End Watch Company is active in Saudi Arabia, in the United Arab Emirates, in the Himalaya Range (in particular in Nepal and in Bhutan) and as well as in western half of China.

2010 A first in the Brands history, West End Watches are now exclusively distributed/sold in the USA and Canada by Empire Brands. EB is a distributor of leading products around the globe.

In 2011, West End Watch Company will celebrate its 125 years of uninterrupted activity so a commemorative book redrawing the history of the brand will be published in 2010 in association with the Centre Jurassien d’Archives et de Recherches Economiques.

The model still manufactured today is Sowar. In Hindu, Sowar means "warrior" and this name was selected in honor of Sir Thomas Edward Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) because it's said that him and his soldiers wore some West End Watch Company watches during the war.

BRIEF HISTORY OF ROTARY WATCHES

It was in 1895 in the small Swiss town of La Chaux-de-fonds that Rotary Watches was founded by Moise Dreyfuss. His famed attention to detail coupled with a keen business acumen ensured that whilst every material was (and still is) carefully chosen and each component assembled with absolute precision the watches represented extremely good value. This commitment to "value for money" quality watchmaking resulted in a business that grew quickly and now over 100 years later Rotary watches Ltd is an international company with timepieces sold in over 35 countries worldwide. Despite this growth Rotary has remained, like Millers Jewellers, very much a family business. The present managing director, Robert Dreyfuss, who took over the helm in 1989, being the great grandson of the founder and is as committed as ever to the founding principles of "quality and value".

Dolphin standard

The commitment to the art of watchmaking and technical innovation has manifested itself recently in the new 'Dolphin Standard'. Water resistance has traditionally been a characteristic of chunky sports watches, however now the majority of the watches in the Rotary ladies and gents ranges (even models which feature stone set bezels, delicate bracelets or ultra-slim cases) have been upgraded to the new, exclusive "Dolphin Standard" meaning that you and your watch can swim and dive all day. Dolphin standard watches are suitable for swimming, shallow diving, yachting, all water sports, bathing and showering.

Limited editions

Since late 2004 Rotary has been releasing 'Limited Edition' watches. Each edition is released at 6 monthly intervals and limited to 500 pieces worldwide. Each Rotary watch is individually numbered and is accompanied by a complimentary self-winding, hand crafted, oak-wood presentation box and an individually signed certificate of authenticity.

About Seiko
In 1877, at the age of 18, Kintaro Hattori set up business repairing the Western-style clocks that were becoming increasingly popular in Japan. By 1892, Hattori was manufacturing his own clocks in a factory he called Seikosha, from the words "seiko" meaning "exquisite," "success," or "miniature," and "sha" meaning "house." The company grew and prospered, producing its first wristwatch in 1913 and launching the Seiko brand in 1924. Technological innovation has always been a driving force in the company's history. Key milestones include Seiko's introduction of the world's first quartz watch in 1969, and its successful launch, in 1988, of the Kinetic, the world's first battery-free watch with quartz accuracy. Today, the Seiko brand continues to stand for state-of-the-art technology, as well as superior quality and refined design.

From Humble beginnings, Kintaro Hattori’s Vision for Seiko has become reality. A consuming passion for excellence - imprinted in our Corporate DNA passed from generation to generation. Seiko, for 125 years committed to the art and science of time.

A culture of innovation connects a 19th century Tokyo clock shop with 20th century advances in timekeeping to an extraordinary 21st century "quiet revolution." Continually driven by dedication and passion, established a multitude of world’s first technologies… transforming the principles of timekeeping.

The first quartz wristwatch – changed the history of time.

The first Kinetic – marked a new era in quartz watch technology.

In 1969, Seiko Astron, the first quartz wristwatch - was introduced.

In an instant, Seiko exponentially improved the accuracy of wristwatches –And Seiko technology firmly established today’s standard in Olympic and sports timing.

1984, another celebrated first – Kinetic Technology – powered by body movement.

Kinetic – a quartz mechanism with unparalleled accuracy –the driving force behind more world’s firsts.

Kinetic Chronograph – the next generation of high performance timekeeping.

Kinetic Auto Relay – automatically resets to the correct time.

Kinetic Perpetual - combining the date perfect technology of perpetual calendar with the genius of Kinetic Auto Relay.

And now Kinetic Direct Drive – move, and the watch is powered automatically. Or hand wind it and see the power you are generating in real time.

Brief Information on Bulova Accutron Turning Fork

The low frequency of the balance wheel made it impossible to improve the accuracy of the present mechanical watches. Therefore the Bulova Watch Company Switzerland, knowing that the American army was in need of a better time base for their instruments, asked the Swiss engineer Max Hetzel in 1952 to look into the possibility of the application of a higher frequency in a watch.
Max Hetzel was born in Basle in 1921, graduated in 1946 at the Zurich Federal Polytechnic School as an electronic engineer, worked on TV and Communications and joined the Bulova Watch Company of Bienne, Switzerland, in 1948.
This outstanding engineer was the first one to use an electronic device, a transistor in a wrist watch. Thus, Max Hetzel developed the first watch in the world that truly deserved the qualification 'electronic': the world-famous 'Bulova Accutron'.

1953Max Hetzel receives the first useful transistors, the 'CK 722', from Raython USA and produces his first working model by hand. The length of the tuning fork was five centimeters. The patent application is filed in Switzerland on June 19th 1953 under no. 312290.
1954The ATO electronic pendulum clock is shown at the CIC in Paris, the first clock in the world with a transistor and without electrical contacts. In June, the first useful batteries suitable for watches, invented by Mallory, become available. In November, the first prototype wristwatch is made to function.
1955Eight watch-sized models are produced in Bienne. In Switzerland many doubted whether 'The Accutron' would become successful.
1956The president of the Bulova Watch Co. in New York, Arde Bulova, and his engineers become enthusiastic about the tuning fork system.
1959Max Hetzel goes to New York with his family and becomes Chief Physicist at the headquarters in Jackson Heigts, New York. The Bulova Accutron is developed by team work of two scientists: Max Hetzel and William O. Bennett. The start of the production-engineering phase takes off.
1960On October 10th, the new president of the Bulova Watch Co., Omar N. Bradley, ex-chief of staff of General D. Eisenhower and known for hisparticipation in the Normandy Offensive, announces the Bulova Accutron caliber 214, the first electronic watch in the world. Cased in steel, gold or platinum, the number of parts had been dramatically reduced to a mere 27 of which only 12 were moving parts. By comparison, a selfwinding watch at that time contained about 136 parts, 26 of them moving. The sale of the Accutron starts on October 25th.
1964The 'Bulova Accutron' is chosen to be buried for a time period of 5000 years on the grounds of the New York World Fair in order to save it for future generations as an example of one of the 44 most innovative objects to be invented during the last two and a half decades.
1964-1970In different trips into space with the 'Explorer' and the 'Apollo', the 'Bulova Accutron' is used by astronauts with full satisfaction.
1966The first tuning fork wrist watches are registered at the Observatory of Neuchtel by Ebauches S.A. and by C.E.H. of Neuchtel.
1973At this time four million 'Bulova Accutrons' have been sold since production started.

Description of the Accutron.

The 'Bulova Accutron' has a frequency of 360 oscillations per second (360 Hz). The vibration of the tuning fork is controlled by a transistorised circuit in the following way:

When the left magnet on the tuning fork moves to the right, the phase-sensing coil generates an induction voltage on the base of the transistor. The transistor 'switches on', becomes a conductor instead of a resistor and the electrical current is able to start flowing through the right circuit. The drive-coil becomes a magnet and gives an impulse to the permanent magnet. The movement of the permanent magnet in the driving-coil also causes an induction voltage opposing the power cell voltage. The result is a very small electric current and a prolongued battery life.
The problem of turning the linear motion of the fork into a circular motion of the hands is solved in the following way: the index jewel is connected to the fork and pushes the ratchet wheel one tooth forward, the pawl jewel is fixed to the watch frame and prevents the ratchet wheel from revolving backwards. The ratchet wheel was an outstanding technical achievement: 2.4 mm in diameter, 0.04 mm thick and 300 teeth, each 1/100 mm high. In one year it revolves 38 milion times. To protect the ratchet system, the Accutron may be set only by turning the hands in a forward direction.
Another technical hallmark were the coils: the driving coil has 8,000 turns made of wire with a diameter of 0.015 mm and an incredible length of about 90 meters.

BRIEF HISTORY OF REVUE THOMMEN WATCHES:

After the construction of the Basel-Olten railway line in the 1850s, the little Jura town of Waldenburg, situated on the Basel-Geneva trade route, was forced to fight the unemployment and poverty in its population. In 1853, the borough decided to introduce the watch and clock making industry and founded the “Société d’Horlogerie à Waldenburg”(Waldenburg clock and watch making company). But the enterprise didn’t flourish until it was privatised and taken over by the young merchant Gédéon Thommen in 1859. Manufacturing and assembly methods were fundamentally improved and a particular importance was attached to the production of quality watches.

The company, managed under the name of “Gédéon Thommen –watch makers”, originally gave its watches the brand mark “G.T.”. The “système à pièces interchangeables”(interchangeable components system), which consisted in the interchangeability of individual watch components, was groundbreaking, and made it possible to transfer to series production. An invention protected by a “Remontoir patent” led to the simplification of the spring winding device and hand adjustment.
While 4 000 watches were produced in 1870, an output of 13000 watches was reached in metricconverter produced in 1890. Thommen was becoming less and less dependent on suppliers, as the aspiring company could produce movement blanks in its own workshops. From 1875 the company was not only making cylinder watches – they were also producing lever pocket watches. An invention patented in 1885, and which is still amazing today, was the G.T. “Springeruhr” with a very modern looking mechanical digital display.

G. Thommens’ far-sightedness and capacity for work were no secret to the public, to whom he devoted himself in many ways. He was co-founder of the “Waldenburger Bezirksblatts” (Waldburg local newspaper) and played an eminent part in the founding of the Waldenburg railway, which was opened in 1880 as the smallest narrow-gauge railway in Europe operated by steam and brought traffic to the Waldenburg valley. He was a member of the national assembly for 26 years. The education system was a particular matter of his concern.

After the death of the industry pioneer G. Thommen, his son Alphonse founded the company Thommens Uhrenfabriken AG in 1905. The REVUE watches produced with their own production machines according to modern methods met with general approval among experts. The increasing demand for wristwatches was based on the product’s outstanding quality and the opening up of new markets. Subsidiaries were opened in Gelterkinden and Langenbruck and another production facility was built in Waldenburg.

The currency breakdown in many countries, the severe economic crisis of the 1930s and the “templating”, i.e. the mass exportation of watch components, which was damaging to the prestige of Swiss watches, also caused the Waldenburg watch manufacturer a lot of trouble. The Thommens Uhrenfabriken AG research and development department surprised the industry experts more than once with innovations, which marked their epoch. To mention just a few: the self-compensating Nivarox balance spring, the timing machine for watch timing and the REVUE-SPORT wristwatches meeting the toughest demands for the first time.

In the 1980s, the company’s management decided to strengthen the link with “THOMMEN” navigation instruments for aviation and to rename the watch brand “REVUE THOMMEN”. Revue Thommen, supplier of precision instruments for the aviation industry since 1936 is indeed the most legitimate manufacturer of pilot watches. Their Airspeed and Streamline models in the upper middle market and the elegant creations Wallstreet and Open Heart attracted a lot of interest.

After merge with Vulcain watch company, REVUE THOMMEN re-produced the "president watch" in 1997, from the original Cricket made in 1951. It was considered one of the first alarm watches ever made famously known as "President Watch" because 3 American President wore them. The Revue Thommen “Cricket” wristwatch almost attained cult status. The table clocks, whose design was based on the “Thommen” on-board chronometers for civil and military aircraft, complete the Revue Thommen range.

Until 1961 about a hundred different G.T. calibres were developed and produced. From 1961 onwards, further calibres were added, and were identified by initials. The initials from the beginning of the alphabet were for small watch movements, and the initials from the end of the alphabet were reserved for the larger watch movements. For example, the ladies calibre K12 corresponds to the size 8 3/4. These calibres are all produced today with the G.T. marking.
