BRIEF HISTORY OF VULCAIN WATCHES

Founded in 1858 and internationally renowned, particularly thanks to the 1947 presentation of the world's first mechanical alarm wristwatch, the famous Cricket, the company is once again producing Vulcain alarm wristwatches. The company presented its new collections, all equipped with the Cricket movement that made a major contribution to establishing the company's international reputation. The Cricket watch was also nicknamed "The Presidents' Watch", since Eisenhower, Nixon and Johnson were all loyal customers and eminent ambassadors for the Cricket. This model, which has made its mark on watchmaking history, owes its name to its distinctive sound resembling the strident cry of the chirpy insect. Bernard R. Fleury and Alain Claude, respectively President and CEO and Technical Director of the new entity have launched the production of 5,000 Vulcain watches this year and plan to increase production progressively to reach 10,000 a year in the medium term. The United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Switzerland are the first markets targeted by the new management team. The company has chosen not to exhibit at the spring trade fairs this year, preferring to focus its efforts on product developments and host its clients at the company head office in Le Locle.

1947 will remain a significant milestone in watchmaking history. 55 years ago, the first genuinely functional mechanical alarm wristwatch was presented by Vulcain. For the very first time, watchmakers and scientists had succeeded in achieving what many researchers had attempted before them: a mechanical alarm wristwatch powerful enough to actually wake up its owner.

For Vulcain, a company founded in 1858, the year 1947 was to mark the start of a new era. As soon the first alarm wristwatch models were presented, the whole world appeared to be clamouring for what would become "The Presidents' Watch". More than 50 years later, the watch Manufacture intends to rebuild on the foundations of this exceptional legacy to write a major new chapter in the history of the Vulcain brand.

It is in Le Locle, strategically located in the Neuchatel Jura region with its deep historical watchmaking roots that the company has decided to establish itself in order to revive the Vulcain brand and relaunch production of the Cricket movements in their original functions.

The new Vulcain philosophy is not to move mountains, nor to cultivate unbridled ambitions for the company. On the contrary, since the brand has not been particularly active during the past decade, it must first be revived before relaunching. It is through a policy based on a long-term vision that the new firm intends to regain a niche position in the watchmaking world of tomorrow.

The new company - In September 2001, Production & Marketing Horloger SA (PMH SA), based in Le Locle, acquired the Vulcain and Cricket brands as well as exclusive operating rights and production tools to the famous Cricket mechanical alarm movement.

President and CEO Bernard R. Fleury and Technical Director Alain Claude are the two main figures at the head of PMH SA. In light of the fine quality of the product and the exceptional horological heritage it represents, both men wished to revive the Cricket calibre and to give the Vulcain brand a new lease on life. PMH SA was set up on the basis of this determination.

Despite the brand's rich past, the new company does not intend to implement a backward-looking policy, either in marketing or sales terms. Bernard R. Fleury and Alain Claude are not devoting their energies to replicating what was done fifty years ago. Quite clearly, it is on the strength of the mechanical alarm calibre that the new company must be built, but they intend to use it as a springboard towards new horizons. Nonetheless, the rebirth announced in the spring of 2002 naturally needed to clearly express the strong ties between the brand's heyday in the past century and the new entity.

Vulcain Cricket was 3 of US Presidents favorite watch and made popular and highly seek by watch collector. Now is your chance to own this prestigious VULCAIN Swiss watch series.

History of Sicura and Breitling Watches

Former name * Sicura Montres SA

Purpose of the company

Manufacture, sale and development of all products and components for watches, jewelry and jewelry industry for the manufacture of instruments and accessories of aviation for the textile and leather industry, optical instruments and other various accessories. Breitling AG Grenchen, Old names:

- Montres Sicura SA Grenchen

- Watches Sicura AG Grenchen

- Sicura Grenchen Watch Company Ltd.

The current Sicura/Breitling SA is the continue of Sicura/Breitling history and its founded in 1955. The history of Breitling on the brand name, than is the name Breitling-Laederich the first Breitling brand in the year 1840, not G. Leon Breitling and not Leon G. Breitling SA in 1884.
Leon Breitling and his son Gaston never used the brand name Breitling on their watchs, only after the death of Gaston Breitling in 1927 the Leon G. Breitling SA started with the brand name Breitling on the dial.

Breitling 1884 was only a marketing joke of E. Schneider, when he invented his first new Chronomat in 1984. Of the current Breitling company. The current company prefers to celebrate the Anniversary of Leon, Gaston, and Willy Breitling's company. Note that the current company only switched from Sicura AG to Breitling AG in 1993. The very early 1980s watches sometimes had cases marked for Sicura. I think Breitling The Book has some very interesting pages on the transition.

Breitling Laederich is an older company, but there is no known connection to the company founded in 1884 by Leon Breitling. It is misleading to confuse the two companies.

There is no known advertising or catalog copy that shows "Breitling" on the dial of a watch before the mid-/late- 1930s. Many sellers will offer pieces arguing otherwise. However, that all watches made by the company founded by Leon Breitling in 1884 will show a mark of the company on the movement, sometimes under the dial. Most horlogeries don't accept an older Breitling as real until they see a mark known to be used by the company on the movement. The exception is the 1940s, when only the marks on the cases identify a real Breitling

In May 1955, sole proprietorship named "Joh. Gobber, Horlogerie", Grenchen bought stock company's foundation, it has been run by Ernest Schneider. Mr. Schneider acquired property rights of "Montres Breitling" in Geneva in 1979, a trademark which had been held by the Breitling family since 1884. The Geneva based production was transferred to "Montres Sicura AG" in Grenchen, which adopted the name of Breitling AG in 1993.' 'Former name: Montres Sicura SA; as of 29.11.1993: Breitling AG'

Gevril Legacy

The Gevril watch company was begun by Jacques Gevril in the mid-1700s in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland's center of watch-making for centuries. He was a sought-after master of horology, and he created his first chronometer in 1743 and his first repetition dial in 1744. Most notably, he was called upon by the King of Spain in 1758 to produce a personal timepiece, which went over so well that Gevril was appointed as Royal Swiss Watchmaker to the Spanish Crown.

The Gevril family tradition of watchmaking was passed onto Jacques's son, Moyse Gevril, and in 1784 he achieved the status of Master Clockmaker. During the 1800s, the Gevril family expanded their art to include enameling as well as the creation of dials for their watches. Gevril timepieces are displayed in museums across Europe--most notably the Museum Geneve and the Rolex Museum (where a Gevril pocket watch is displayed in the collection personally selected by the Wilsdorf family, the founder of Rolex).

The company was purchased by Samuel Friedmann in 2000, who believed the Gevril name represented an ideal combination of history and future potential. Today's signature Avenue of Americas line is based on a case design from the 1920, which was discovered after going through Gevril's raft of historical documents and design books. It has a retro look, but is updated with a bevelled dial with raised, hand-painted numbers and straight chrono pushers for a contemporary feel.

Creating a Gevril timepiece is exhaustive, and Gevril expends years into the design and manufacture of its rare and enduring timepiece collections. It manufactures only limited edition collections, with 6,000 Gevril watches created each year and each line limited to 500 (stainless steel) or 100 (gold) pieces. The company also sources only the best materials and accoutrements, including 316L stainless steel, natural mother-of-pearl dials, Wesselton diamonds calibrated by CNC machines and Louisiana crocodile skin.

About Seiko
In 1877, at the age of 18, Kintaro Hattori set up business repairing the Western-style clocks that were becoming increasingly popular in Japan. By 1892, Hattori was manufacturing his own clocks in a factory he called Seikosha, from the words "seiko" meaning "exquisite," "success," or "miniature," and "sha" meaning "house." The company grew and prospered, producing its first wristwatch in 1913 and launching the Seiko brand in 1924. Technological innovation has always been a driving force in the company's history. Key milestones include Seiko's introduction of the world's first quartz watch in 1969, and its successful launch, in 1988, of the Kinetic, the world's first battery-free watch with quartz accuracy. Today, the Seiko brand continues to stand for state-of-the-art technology, as well as superior quality and refined design.

BRIEF INFORMAION ON SEIKO WRISTWATCHES

The company started with the name Seiko in 1938. However, the original ancestor of the company was a business run by a local clockmaker in Tokyo by the name, Kintaro Hattori. The business was named K. Hattori and later it evolved into a company by the name Seiko corporation, Tokyo. The business originally started as a clock and jewellery shop and in 1892. It began production of clocks under the name Seikosha, which later evolved into Seiko.

Initially the company was named K. Hattori & Co in 1918 and was later named as Hattori Seiko & Co in 1983. Finally, in 1990 it became Seiko corporations. It established various companies under its name such as Seiko Watch Corporation, and became a holding corporation in 2001 and was finally named as Seiko Holdings Corporation in 2007. Although the company produces many different types of clocks and watches, it is particularly famous for its wristwatches.

In 1924, the first watch under the name Seiko was produced. Seiko also has the honour of producing the first quartz watch in the world under the name Astron. Thus by this fact only, one can get a basic idea of the rank of Seiko watches in the world of wristwatches. When this watch was first introduced, its cost was more than that of a medium sized car. However, this watch was a breakthrough in technology and set a new standard, which is being followed to this day.

In 1985 Seiko and orient watches set up a joint factory, which produces millions of watches each year. Seiko watches are known for their reliability and accuracy in time keeping, which is why their watches have been used for official time keeping in major sports events and the Olympic Games, which is also an honourable rank for the company.

The company produces different lines of watches of which, the most famous are Seiko 5, Grand Seiko, King Seiko and Credor. Collectors, due to their high esteem and unique features, treasure these watches as prized possessions. Seiko mechanical watches are especially considered as prized possession by collectors. When it comes to Seiko classic watches, the older a watch, the more precious it is.

Seiko wristwatches range from 50$ to 100,000$, which is certainly a price tag for luxury and high esteem. The Seiko kinetic watches being produced these days take the major portion of their sales in the modern era as they combine the self-energising feature of automatic watches with the high accuracy of quartz in time keeping.

Rado is a Swiss manufacturer of watches, with headquarters in Lengnau, Switzerland. It is noted for its use of scratch-proof materials, a field in which it is considered a pioneer. Today the company produces about half a million watches a year with a staff of about 300 in total.

Formed in 1917 as Schlup & Co., Rado initially produced watch movements only. In 1957 the company launched its first collection of watches under the Rado brand. In 1962 the Rado Diastar, the world's first scratch-proof watch, was launched. It has been in production ever since, now sold as DiaStar The Original.

In 1983 Rado became part of the SMH group which was renamed in 1998 as the Swatch Group.

RADO differs from the traditional Swiss watch makers in that it leans towards innovative uses of high tech materials in distinct design. RADO has focused on pioneering the use of a number of materials that are unique within the watch making industry, such as e.g. hardmetal (tungsten and titanium carbide), ceramic, lanthanum and sapphire crystal.

In 2004 the RADO vision was realized with the introduction of the V10K. Coating the watch with high tech diamonds made the V10K the hardest watch on Earth, realized by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The newer RADO watches are also distinct from the traditional Swiss watch industry in that their aesthetic is unique. Market reaction tends to be mixed to such a strong aesthetic, with many who appreciate the unique and distinct RADO look and those who do not.

During their time, RADO has received more than 20 elite international design awards, from the RED DOT Award to the iF Design Award, for both their product and most recently, their collaboration with Jasper Morrison for an innovative watch box that mimics the shape of the human wrist.
