Swiss inventor and architect Ulrich Van-Heusen was a master craftsman who dedicated himself to his trade. He lived in an era when only the wealthy could afford a timepiece. But in 1923, Van-Heusen completed his first automatic calendar watch - only one of seven he ever completed. It displayed not only the time, but also the date, day and month; and it was the first to designate the difference between AM and PM. Van-Heusen named his brand Steinhausen after the region in Switzerland from where his family came. He was steadfast in his belief that wristwatches, not the prevalent pocket watch, would eventually become an item people could not live without. And he was correct! The Great Depression almost eliminated handmade watches of this quality. One that remains today fetched $300,000 at auction. Wristwatches became the must-have item for people of all social strata, but the distinguished gentry continued to buy Steinhausen's handcrafted marvels.

Steinhausen continues its reputation of producing the finest workmanship and classy designs. And now, we are pleased to re-introduce the original Steinhausen model with stylish updates. Like the original Steinhausen, each watch is painstakingly reproduced by hand from 185 genuine Swiss parts. Then it is so rigorously tested for two weeks that just six percent of movements made end up in a Steinhausen. Swiss automatic movement standards allow for an accuracy of +25/-27 seconds per day and the Steinhausen watches rate +15/-13 seconds per day, making it more accurate.

The Limited Edition Leonardo follows the tradition of displaying the movement through exhibition frontcase and backcase. The sweeping second-hand movement, brushed and polished stainless steel, and gold tone dial with Roman numerals is included, too. However, they added hand-cut precious sapphire gemstones from Vietnam to the buttons to add a rich luster, 21 jewels aid movement and accuracy; and interchangeable brown, black leather and gold/stainless steel wristbands to match whatever you're wearing.

THE MAGNIFICENT OF OMEGA CAL. 321

I had the pleasure of getting a look under the hood of Omega’s vintage chronograph calibre 321 which I just required time this week and was duly impressed. Predecessor to the now classic calibre 861, which earned its place in the history books as the movement which ran in the famed “First Watch Worn on the Moon”, I hadn’t heard much of it before. More than likely due to its age and the simple fact of it being lost in the shadow of its younger brother.

Unlike the 861 however, the 321 is the finest specimen of movement I have seen from this manufacture. Which came as quite a surprise to me. The 321 is a column wheel operated chronograph and boasts a Breguet overcoil, with guards fitted to the regulating pins to keep the hairspring from jumping out from between them should the watch be subjected to a strong shock. The 861 on, on the other hand, is more economically made, using a more easily mass produced cam to operate the chronograph, and doing away with the overcoil and guards. Even more unfortunate, is how much further removed the 321 is in quailty of crafstmanship from Omega’s calibre 1861, which replaced the 861.

Most noticeable is the substitution of rhodium plating in place of the rose gold plating that is employed on the 861 and 321. That, though, is of little consequence. In fact, I could say it is one point in favour of the 1861, as rhodium is more durable than gold. The value of either depends on one’s perspective. Both have their merits. The point, though, is moot when held against the quality of steel used in the 321 and 861. More correctly, it is the quality of finish of the steel, particularly at the pivots, where the older calibres outpace the new. The pivots in the 321 are so carefully burnished that they still hold such a silky, deep lustre, that they hardly look a day old once cleaned. I cannot say as much for Omega’s more recent chronographs.

Description and Overview

This is another ultimate men's wristwatch. A man's watch should be his best piece of jewelery, since we shouldn't wear a jewelery that a women do.

In 1971, Rolex came out with a new adventurer’s watch aptly named the Explorer II, designed especially for cave explorers. This model was a true achievement because it had a feature that could help the speleologists (cave explorers) to know whether it was day or night. Finally, cave explorers spending multiple days at a time in deep caverns, would be able to keep proper track of the time.

The Rolex Explorer II was given the model number 1655 when introduced in 1971. It featured crown guards, a new fixed and engraved 24 hour bezel, and an extra orange colored 24-hour hand. This extra 24-hour hand, when used against the bezel, helped to distinguish day from night by clearly differentiating AM from PM. The 24-hour engraved bezel in this model makes it, essentially, a GMT Master. In addition, it has the same caliber movement as the GMT (1575). It also features a 12-hour hand that can be adjusted to allow changes in time zones.

The first improvement came in the form of a red-colored extra 24-hour hand as opposed to the orange color in previous versions. In the pitch-black darkness of the deep caves, red was easier on the eyes than orange. By mid 1985, the new Explorer II was launched with the following new features included:

• Standard 40mm case size
• New bezel rendering the Explorer II a stylish look
• Mercedes hands in place of old, large stick hands
• A slimmer sapphire crystal
• Black and white dial options
• Special 24-hour hand and same "jump hour" feature as that of the GMT Master II

The jump hour feature in the new Explorer II allows the owner to set the hour hand forward or backwards in one hour jumps without disturbing the second or minute hands. In other words, the owner can easily change time zones without losing a preset accurate time.

Today, of the several different Explorer II models offered by Rolex, the model available in steel with a white dial is the most popular. Like other Rolex models, it is self-winding and waterproof to 330 feet. It also features an Oysterlock bracelet with a safety clasp. Even for explorers in harsh conditions in the depths of caves, Rolex offers the unique combination of class and precision.

The Submariner features a lustrously glossy dial that is free of the COSC verbiage, "Superlative Chronometer, Officially Certified" that graces the dial of the Submariner Date. While the COSC cert has its value, the two-fewer lines of printing on the dial allow more space for the engagingly lustrous glossy black finish on the dial to show. I like this a lot.

There is no date window, making the dial perfectly symmetrical. The markers at 9:00 and 3:00 match up.

The hands and markers are made of 18K gold. As I understand it, the tritium luminous material that was originally used would erode steel markers and hands, so white gold was introduced. While the luminous material on this current model is non-radioactive Luminova, the white gold parts remain as vestiges of the past.

The Submariner is essentially the same watch as it was when introduced in 1954. The only differences, are the markers, which are now white/yellow gold rings rather than luminous paint; gloss dial rather than flat black; crown guards; and the movement, which has been updated. These are very subtle changes over the 52-year history of the watch. If you were to look at the first Sub and the latest Sub side by side, they would look essentially the same. I can't think of any other watch that his been in continuous production for five decades. This is the most copied watch in the world - even Timex makes one!

Case

The case is the Rolex Oyster. I can't say anything that hasn't already been said. It is thick, machined stainless steel. The steel is 904L, which is more resistant to salt water than the 316L used by other makers, and costs three times as much. It looks different from 316L, too. It takes abuse and shines up with dish soap and paper towels. A battle tested, time-proven, original Rolex design that has been copied by nearly every other maker.

This Movement

The Submariner comes with the Rolex 3130 movement, which is the result of 50 years of painful, Rolex-slow improvement. It contains 31 rubies, beats at 28,800 cph, and is referred to as a "tracteur." The name rings true: The 3130 is not pretty, but it is a large, durable, highly accurate movement that is easy to service. Kinda like a John Deere tractor.

This brings up a bit of Rolex history. Rolex was the first to introduce a waterproof case, with the Oyster. Hans Wilsdorf realized that the weak link was the crown, and Rolex then came up with the screw-down crown. Unscrewing the crown daily to wind the watch wore down the seals, so Rolex sought rights to a self-winding movement, and was the first to introduce one. With the self-winding movement, the crown could be left alone, minimizing wear on the seals and maintaining water- and dust-proofness. Thus, Oyster (waterproof case) Perpetual (self-winding movement). All proper Rolexes (i.e. not Cellinis) have "Oyster Perpetual" inscribed on the dial.

Bracelet

We like to make fun of our Rolex bracelets. Cheap, stamped metal, hollow links, light weight. But the light weight makes it comfortable to wear all day (I'd remove my Omega Seamaster whenever I was at my desk), and abuse it as I do, a few minutes with a toothbrush and some dish soap makes it as lustrous as new. It has thick springbars and a fliplock catch that hold it together securely. My Seamaster bracelet was heavier, but it would pop open occasionally. My Rolex Oyster Fliplock bracelet hasn't yet failed. It has a classic look that everyone else has copied. I love it.

The heart of a watch is the movement. The Rolex Submariner has a Rolex movement. If the company on the dial does not make the movement, then the company is just a maker of dials and cases, not watches. Rolex is in-house watchmaker.

Omega, Panerai, and many others, have ETA movements, made by the Swatch group. ETA makes some lovely movements, but those brands that use the same ETA movements as everybody else make cases, bracelets, and dials, not wristwatches. Anybody could machine a case, affix a strap to it, install an ETA movement, hype it as a limited edition, and charge few thousands for the thing. Rolex (along with Patek Philippe, Zenith, Jaeger Le-Coultre, and Seiko) makes watches. Your name on it should mean you made it. If it says Rolex, it was made by Rolex.

James Bond Watch

Rolex Submariner was the first watch worn by James Bond in James Bond movie until was taken over by Omega Seamaster Professional in Golden Eyes.
